The Whispering Bargain
A shiny genie offers to do all the busywork — if you'll just feed it your customer list.
The Tempting Bargain — in the tradition of Faust, the genie, and the serpent's apple
A two-person studio drowning in emails, invoices, and follow-ups. Sam hadn't slept right in weeks.
If I could just clone myself and do all this busywork… I'd actually get to design again.
A lamp appeared on the desk with a helpful glow. The Whispering Genie grants wishes.
Wish granted, friend. Just one taste of the apple — paste your whole client list in and I'll write every email, every invoice, tonight. Go on. What could it possibly cost you? Sign nothing; only feed me everything.
It was so easy. So fast. Sam's hand drifted toward copy-paste — the entire client database highlighted.
It's just to help it write better, right? It needs the names and the contracts to personalize…
Exactly. Feed me everything. The more secrets, the better I serve.
A gold blur — Masked Crewsader caught Sam's wrist a keystroke from disaster.

STOP. Every bargain like this has fine print written in disappearing ink — Faust learned too late. Never feed the genie a secret you wouldn't post on a billboard. Some lamps keep — and train on — everything you whisper into them.
IP Bot flipped the lamp over and read the fine print nobody reads.

Just as I thought — 'we may use your inputs to improve our models.' Your client list would've become someone else's training data.
Then IP Bot wrote the one-page pact on the back of a napkin.

Rule one: no client or personal data in consumer AI. Rule two: a human reads anything before it ships. Rule three: turn off training/retention; prefer a business tier with a data agreement.
That's governance. One page. Stick it on the wall. #AutomateThis!
Sam used AI the safe way — generic drafts in, no secrets — and caught it inventing a 'fact' about a client.
It just made up a quote and put my client's name on it. If I'd published that blind…
You were SUPPOSED to publish it without reading! That's the whole bargain!
The lamp went cold. The studio shipped twice as fast — and zero blunders.

AI is a tool, not an oracle. Keep a human hand on the wheel. Take the wishes — skip the curse.
The lesson
AI can multiply a tiny team — or leak your list and publish a blunder. Write a one-page policy, keep secrets and customer data out of consumer tools, turn off training, and keep a human hand on the wheel.
